This one is a challenge given the number of things I’ve been diagnosed with over the years and there are a few commonalities between a couple of my diagnosis’ (see, About Me for a complete list of my diagnosis’) . Take my anorexia and borderline personality diagnosis’ and both have a self-harm aspect to them; so does my self-harm come from my anorexia or my BPD?
For a long time my night terrors were misdiagnosed simply because at the time my PTSD hadn’t been diagnosed which often has a night terror aspect to it as well as flashbacks (both things I’ve had to learn to live with). So when you have someone with multiple mental health issues at play, it is easy for things to be misdiagnosed because it is difficult to know where the symptoms of one problem stops and another problems symptoms start.
I have had to deal with a number of stereotypes due to a few of my diagnosis’ too. A prime example is my BPD; there are articles on the internet like “Never date a girl with borderline personality disorder”, “How to Spot a Girl with Borderline Personality Disorder”, or “Divorce a Spouse With Borderline Personality Disorder?” which basically says you should divorce someone simply because they have BPD. So there are a lot of negative stereotypes and stigma associated with a BPD diagnosis, all of it a quick internet search away. The problem with a lot of these so-called articles is that they go off of stereotypical generalizations about people with BPD, so they basically use stereotypes to perpetuate further stereotypes.
Generally speaking, for the most part I agree with the diagnosis’ I have. Some I’m not too sure about, particularly the avoidant personality disorder and the adjustment disorder, which I personally don’t see but I do meet the criteria for. My questions with these two diagnosis’ is can these simply be the side effects of one of my other issues? Yes, I have a very hard time adjusting to changes but that is also a component to BPD, so which is it? To some degree I can see a lot of the avoidant personality in me, but I also have social anxiety, agoraphobia, and isolation issues which could look like avoidant personality disorder or they could just be components to my panic disorder. So the question I struggle with frequently with things like this are all of my diagnosis’ accurate? Hard to say…
Peace, love, and contentment,
